“Founded by the care of the Confederation” reads the inscription. This is the Reduit in Mainz-Kastel. Built between 1830 and 1834 it’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to a time when Mainz was a crucial fortress for the German Confederation. The Reduit was designed for all-around defense. Its location was strategically important. It protected the bridge across the Rhine both from land and water attacks.

Imagine the scene during its construction. Austrian pioneers toiled amidst challenging conditions. High water levels extended the work. They drove 1800 oak piles into the ground to create a solid foundation. The Reduit wasn’t just a barracks. It housed customs officials and a garrison. Around 1900 the 2nd Nassau Infantry Regiment No 88 was stationed here.

This impressive structure is flanked by the Bastion von Schönborn. Notice the keystone above the gate. A Medusa’s head is flanked by olive and laurel branches. Above a lion clutches a bundle of rods. Six flags representing the German army complete the scene.

The Reduit suffered damage during World War II. However it was renovated in the 1950s and 60s. Today it houses various Kasteler associations. A youth center is also located here. The Museum Castellum provides insight into Kastels’ history. During summer months the courtyard hosts open-air cinema and concerts. This lively Reduit continues to serve its community. It stands as a powerful symbol of Mainz’s rich military past. It also demonstrates enduring community spirit in modern Mainz. The Reduit is more than just stones and mortar. It’s a living history lesson.
