Gaze upon the Hessendenkmal. This unassuming red sandstone obelisk holds a fascinating story. It stands as a silent witness to a pivotal moment in Mainz’s history. The Hessendenkmal commemorates the Hessian-Darmstadt troops’ role in the 1793 Siege of Mainz. Erected in 1858 it remains remarkably well-preserved. Its original wrought-iron fence was restored in 2007.

The Hessendenkmal’s story begins with the French Revolutionary troops. In 1792 they occupied Mainz. The city was a significant fortress. Allied German forces then laid siege to Mainz. They aimed to recapture it from the French. The Hessian-Darmstadt contingent under Landgrave Ludwig X camped near Finthen. Their camp was close to the present-day Römerquelle.

The siege ended successfully. The French surrendered on July 23 1793. As a reward for his participation in the siege Landgrave Ludwig X received territory. This included Finthen. He was then elevated to Grand Duke Ludwig I of Hesse and by the Rhine. The new Hessian province on the Rhine became known as Rheinhessen. This name persists even though Rheinhessen is now part of Rhineland-Palatinate.

Grand Duke Ludwig III later commissioned the Hessendenkmal. He wanted a memorial to the events of 1793. The original inscription on the Hessendenkmal speaks directly of this. It celebrates Landgrave Ludwig X’s encampment there in May June and July of 1793. In 1993 an additional plaque was added. This plaque details the end of the Mainz Republic.

The Hessendenkmal’s construction is another fascinating detail. It was created in the workshop of Darmstadt court sculptor Johann Baptist Scholl the Younger. Scholl was born in Mainz. He was also a painter and caricaturist. Scholl’s son Karl may have assisted with the monument.

The Hessendenkmal’s inauguration on October 10 1858 was a significant local event. The Mainzer Anzeiger newspaper reported extensively on it. The festivities involved a procession a speech and celebratory gunfire. The Grand Duke was represented by his Minister-President. This suggests that there may have been underlying political reasons for its construction.

Today the Hessendenkmal stands as a poignant reminder. It tells a tale of war political maneuvering and lasting territorial changes. It also represents the changing landscape around it. It’s a testament to the historical importance of the region. It’s a silent sentinel urging us to reflect on the past. Remember the Hessendenkmal’s enduring legacy. It whispers tales of courage conflict and compromise.
