Let’s delve into its history. Construction of ChÂteau Mouterde began in the 17th century. Over time it evolved. The Mouterde family acquired it in 1820. Louis Antoine Mouterde an industrialist known for buttons and thimbles, purchased the property. He modernized the chÂteau’s interior giving it a fresh appeal.
Before the Mouterde family owned it Jean Camille Bergeret a lawyer from Lyon had the property in the early 19th century.
The chÂteau sits in Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d’Or. It is about 300 meters above sea level. From here it overlooks the northern slope of the Rochecardon valley. In the past it was known by other names. These include Montfort La Ronflarde and Le Figuier.
Looking at the chÂteau, you can see its unique design. The main part faces southwest on a gentle slope. It features manicured lawns and walkways. An impressive retaining wall supports the western side where a swimming pool is located. The building rises from cellars with a ground floor and two upper stories. The initial construction dates back to the 1700s. A northern gable was added later.
The side facing the street presents a somber facade. Small windows dot the first and second floors. A metal spiral staircase provides access to the second floor. In contrast the western facade is more cheerful. A central tower with a conical roof stands out. Square turrets flank the north and south corners. French windows brighten each level around the tower.
Before 1968 the estate covered six hectares. It included a farm with a cherry tree alley a vegetable garden vineyards an orchard and an orangery. A billiards room and a small house were attached to the orangery.
Emmanuel Mouterde Louis Antoine’s son succeeded him. He became mayor of Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d’Or in 1861 and served until 1870. Later Charles Ennemond another Mouterde became mayor in 1935. He remained in office until 1945. The Mouterde family’s commitment to the town was evident.
