The Château du Mont d’Or isn’t a castle in the traditional sense. It’s more accurately described as a grand country house. Built in the 17th century it’s often compared to a Roman villa. Its unique U-shape is formed by three sections. The building rises gracefully over three levels. A beautiful belvedere crowns the structure its three bays slightly recessed on three sides. The gently sloping roof is covered in tiles. The seven-bay south-facing facade is particularly striking. A balcony supported by two massive consoles resting on pillars adds to its grandeur.
One of the Château du Mont d’Or’s early owners obtained permission to add crenellations to the enclosing walls. This perhaps explains the name. The Sieur Grabert a prominent figure in the Château’s history commissioned a sophisticated hydraulic system in 1668. This system cleverly irrigated the property’s extensive gardens. Through the centuries the Château du Mont d’Or passed through many hands. The Krown family owned it during the 18th century. The Riverieux de Chambost family later acquired the estate. The 19th and 20th centuries saw a succession of owners. Among them was Paul Auloge-Duvivier a notable consul of Colombia. Today the Château du Mont d’Or exists as a co-ownership a shared legacy.
Legend speaks of the Mont d’Or family. Supposedly related to Roland the legendary knight. They are said to have preserved the knight’s horn. This legend is reflected in the coat of arms of Saint-Didier-au-Mont-d’Or. It features a hunting horn.
