The Tour du télégraphe Chappe is a relic from the early 19th century. It represents innovation in a time of revolution. Claude Chappe, a French inventor, devised a system of optical telegraphy. His invention allowed messages to travel faster than any physical means.
France was at war in 1794. The first optical telegraph line connected Lille and Paris. This allowed the government to receive military information quickly. The Tour du télégraphe Chappe here was built in 1821. It was part of the Lyon-Toulon extension. Amazingly this is the only intact tower from that line.
Picture this: Under good conditions, information zipped from Paris to Toulon in twenty minutes. The tower has a square shape. It measures four meters on each side. It stands six meters high. The tower is built with beautiful golden stones. Atop the tower sits a mechanism. It features three mobile arms used to send coded signals.
Consider the technology. The Chappe telegraph used a series of towers. Each tower was within sight of the next. Station operators used telescopes to read the signals. They would then relay the message to the next station.
Our Tour du télégraphe Chappe was station number 55 of 58. This was on the Paris-Lyon line. The line later stretched to Venice. The system worked from 1794 to 1854. The French telegraph network spanned 5000 km. It included 535 stations serving 29 cities.
Life at the Tour du télégraphe Chappe was solitary. Two station operators managed each tower. They alternated shifts at noon. The on-duty operator slept in a small room downstairs. It was only about nine square meters. He would wake before sunrise. Then, he would climb to the top to watch for signals.
Imagine the pressure. If the operator overslept, the chain broke. Messages would be stuck. Inspectors on horseback patrolled. They used spyglasses to ensure everything ran smoothly.
The electric telegraph replaced the Chappe system by 1852. The Tour du télégraphe Chappe was abandoned. In 1854, the equipment was auctioned off. The land went back to its original owners. For a time, the tower housed a property caretaker. Later, it was simply deserted.
Thankfully, preservation efforts began in the 1980s. A parking project threatened the site. So, The Association for the Restoration of the Tour du Télégraphe Chappe of Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon formed. Restoration work began in 1990.
In 1993-94, the CNAM rebuilt the original mechanism. After exhibitions, it was installed on the tower. The tower regained its former glory. Grants and volunteers made it possible.
René Berbezier, president of the preservation association, played a key role. Mr. Gonet from Cnam and the SEPR school helped restore the mechanism. Today, you can visit the tower. It opens on the first Sunday of each month.
