Across the Rhône River stands the Viaduc de Perrache a testament to Lyon’s rich history. This isn’t just any bridge. It’s a vital artery connecting Lyon’s past and present. Built between 1852 and 1856 the Viaduc de Perrache originally linked the Perrache train station to the Brotteaux station. It was also known as the Mediterranean Bridge because it was part of the PLM company’s “imperial artery”.

Imagine the scene in 1856. The iron arches gleaming under the Lyon sun. Each piece painstakingly crafted in Givors then assembled here. These were not merely arches they were feats of engineering. Built using old techniques but reinforced repeatedly throughout its life.

The Viaduc de Perrache saw it all. Two railway lines initially carried bustling trains. Its construction was concurrent with the excavation of the Saint-Irénée tunnel further linking the city. This facilitated the connection from Perrache station all the way to Vaise and beyond to Paris-Lyon.

But the story of the Viaduc de Perrache is not without its drama. World War II left its mark. Damaged by an Allied bomb it was later dynamited by the retreating Germans in 1944. Yet despite the devastation the Viaduc de Perrache survived. The Americans quickly filled in the remaining tracks to allow their heavy vehicles to cross. They used ramps built right into the Perrache station.

The Viaduc de Perrache was rebuilt strengthened. In 1926 it was doubled with steel arches. The cast iron was replaced by steel reinforced with concrete arches. Later in 1951 it was updated for electric trains.

Today as you gaze upon the Viaduc de Perrache feel the weight of history beneath your feet. It remains a symbol of resilience of Lyon’s enduring spirit. It’s a reminder that even through war and destruction hope and progress can prevail. This magnificent bridge stands tall a bridge connecting not only train stations but eras. It’s a silent observer of countless stories. A story that continues to unfold with every passing train. Every new chapter written in Lyon’s vibrant history.
