Step into the world of the Musée Africain in Lyon. This remarkable museum holds a treasure trove of West African art and culture. It’s one of France’s oldest museums dedicated to Africa. Its history is intertwined with the Society of African Missions. Founded in 1856 by Melchior de Marion-Brésillac the museum’s initial goal was to introduce Western audiences to African life.

Monseigneur Marion-Brésillac’s vision was to showcase West African culture. He envisioned a collection of everyday objects religious items and artistic creations. This would paint a picture of daily life in West Africa. Sadly he died before seeing his dream realized. Augustin Planque continued his work. He enlisted missionaries in West Africa. They were tasked with gathering ethnographic objects. These would offer a glimpse into West African society.

The Musée Africain opened its doors in 1863. At first it resembled a cabinet of curiosities more than a museum. It was originally located in Sainte-Foy-lès-Lyon. By 1870 the museum moved to its present location on Cours Gambetta. The building was constructed in the 1920s. The museum as we see it today opened in 1935.

The Musée Africain boasts an impressive collection of over 8000 pieces. Around 2126 objects are on permanent display. The museum’s layout is thematic. The three floors explore everyday social and religious life. This approach reflects a shift from a missionary museum to an ethnographic one. This evolution happened over many years including a period of closure for reorganisation between 1977 and 1979 and further renovation in 2000.

The Musée Africain is more than just a collection of artifacts. It serves as a bridge between cultures. It hosts temporary exhibitions. These feature contemporary works related to Africa and its diaspora. This demonstrates that the African influence continues to shape art and culture today. The museum’s mission is to promote intercultural dialogue. This is done through exhibitions events guided tours and workshops.

The museum also features a library. This holds over 7000 documents. They cover themes like art ethnography and religion. This remarkable resource provides in-depth information. It allows visitors to explore the rich history and cultural heritage of West Africa further.

The Musée Africain stands as a testament to the enduring power of cultural exchange. The collection demonstrates the diversity and universality of West African practices. It also highlights the complex relationship between France and Africa. This journey through the past present and future of African culture is an experience not to be missed.
