Fancy a tale of faith and Gallo-Roman heritage? Then you’re in the right place. We’re standing before the Église Saint-Eucher. This church is dedicated to Eucher of Lyon. He was a senator turned monk turned bishop.

Église Saint-Eucher has a fascinating history. Its construction began in 1803. François Pascalon designed it. Joseph Forest completed the work. The church’s portal faces Rue des Actionnaires. Its nave runs along Rue Mascrany. The back of the church is on Rue Guitton. These streets create an interesting layout around the church.

Église Saint-Eucher became a parish in 1840. This happened at the request of the Croix-Rousse town hall. It was created from part of the Saint-Denis parish. King Louis Philippe officially recognized it in 1841. The church had already been built by this time. It was blessed on Easter Day in 1840. This was just before the first priest was appointed.

Inside Église Saint-Eucher, the style is neoclassical. The vaults show Roman inspiration. The church is 46 meters long and 14 meters wide. Imagine the space filled with light streaming through the stained glass. These windows were made in the 19th and 20th centuries. Artists like Mauveray, Lobin and Jacqui created them.

Église Saint-Eucher is also special for another reason. Henri Grouès, also known as Abbé Pierre was baptized here. He was a Catholic priest and founder of Emmaüs France. He was born in 1912 and died in 2007.

Now consider Eucher himself. He was from a prominent Gallo-Roman family. He owned land in the Pays d’Aigues. Eucher was a senator before becoming a monk. Later, he lived as a hermit. He eventually became the Bishop of Lyon in 435 AD. He served until 449 AD.

Église Saint-Eucher stands as a testament to faith. It also represents Lyon’s rich history. As you leave this place take a moment to reflect. Think about the people who have walked these streets. Remember the stories held within these walls.
