A whirlwind of movement. That’s the first impression of Maison de la Danse.

This isn’t just any theater. It’s Lyon’s House of Dance a vibrant hub dedicated to the art of movement. It started modestly in 1980. Five Lyon choreographers had a dream a place solely for dance. Their vision became reality. The first building dedicated to dance in all of France and Europe opened its doors.

This initial success was unexpected. The Maison de la Danse thrived. It quickly outgrew its space. In 1992 it moved to its current location in Lyon’s 8th arrondissement. The building itself has a fascinating history. Originally constructed in 1968 it was intended to be a banquet hall. Architect Pierre Bourdeix a student of Tony Garnier designed it.

Over the years Maison de la Danse has hosted over 500 French and international dance companies. More than 100 works by young French choreographers have premiered here. The building boasts a main performance hall seating 1100. There’s also a smaller 96-seat studio named after Jorge Donn. This space is where resident companies work and create.

The Maison de la Danse is more than just a venue. It’s a testament to the power of dance. It’s a place where innovation and tradition come together. A place where dancers from around the globe gather to share their passion. It’s a treasure for Lyon and a destination for dance lovers everywhere.
