What secrets lie hidden within the human skull? Before you, bathed in the Lyon sunlight, sits Démocrite méditant sur le siège de l’âme. This bronze statue, created by Léon-Alexandre Delhomme in 1868, captures the Greek philosopher Democritus in a moment of deep contemplation. His eyes are half-closed, his head rests heavily on his fist, the weight of his thoughts palpable. In his hand, he holds a skull, a stark reminder of mortality. Démocrite méditant sur le siège de l’âme is more than just a statue. It’s a bridge between ancient philosophy and 19th-century artistry. Delhomme, a student of Auguste Dumont, completed this masterpiece just three years after joining Dumont’s workshop. The statue was first exhibited at the Salon des artistes français in 1869. It later won the gold medal at the Lyon Universal Exposition of 1872. The city of Lyon acquired the statue in 1873 for 4,000 francs, thanks to the support of Delhomme’s former teacher, Fabisch. Delhomme’s inspiration for Démocrite méditant sur le siège de l’âme was twofold. He sought to portray Democritus in the traditional pose of meditation, reflecting the philosopher’s quest for understanding. He also drew inspiration from La Fontaine’s XXVIth fable, “Democritus and the Abderites”. This fable interprets a letter, supposedly from Hippocrates to Damagetus, about Democritus’s search for the seat of reason. The statue’s base bears an inscription from the fable: “Hippocrates arrived at the time when he who was said to have neither rhyme nor reason was searching in man and beast where reason resides, be it the heart or the head.” This inscription connects the statue directly to La Fontaine’s whimsical tale. Démocrite méditant sur le siège de l’âme now resides in the garden of the Musée des Beaux-Arts de Lyon, in the former Palais Saint-Pierre. It stands as a testament to Delhomme’s skill and his unique interpretation of a classical theme. As you gaze upon this contemplative figure, consider the enduring questions it poses about the nature of reason, the human soul, and the mysteries hidden within the very structure we hold in our hands.
