Claude-Marius Vaïsse Bust

Lost in the verdant expanse of Parc de la Tête d’Or, a simple bust stands atop a grand pedestal. This is the Claude-Marius Vaïsse Bust, a tribute to a man who reshaped Lyon. Vaïsse, Prefect of the Rhône from 1853 to 1864, earned the nickname “Haussmann of Lyon”. Like Haussmann’s transformation of Paris, Vaïsse dramatically modernized Lyon. He orchestrated the creation of Rue Impériale, now Rue de la République. He also spearheaded the development of Rue de l’Impératrice, now Rue Édouard-Herriot. His vision extended beyond bustling streets. He realized the dream of Parc de la Tête d’Or, a green oasis he called “the countryside for those who have none.” A grand statue was planned to honor Vaïsse in 1869. However, the fall of the Second Empire in 1870 halted these plans. The statue, deemed too controversial for the changing political climate, was never erected in its intended location. His descendants eventually sold the statue to be melted down in 1902. The large pedestal, originally meant for the statue, was placed in the park. Only the bust, intended for a quieter corner of the park, was placed atop the pedestal. This created a peculiar disproportion, a silent testament to a legacy both celebrated and contested. A curious detail remains. Four statues of children, representing the four seasons, were meant to adorn Vaïsse’s grand statue. They now reside in the niches of the park’s Orangerie, a subtle reminder of the original tribute.
