Atop Fourvière Hill stands the Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière a breathtaking basilica. It’s more than just a building. It’s a testament to faith resilience and Lyonnaise spirit.

Construction began in 1872. The basilica was built in thanks for protecting Lyon during the Franco-Prussian War of 1870. The neo-Byzantine style is striking. Architect Pierre Bossan’s vision was ambitious. He oversaw the project from afar due to health issues. Louis Sainte-Marie Perrin handled much of the on-site work. The unique architecture drew both admiration and harsh criticism. Some even called it “the upside-down elephant”.

The basilica’s history stretches back centuries. A chapel dedicated to Saint Thomas of Canterbury stood on this very spot. Later it became a place of devotion to the Virgin Mary. In 1643 city officials vowed a pilgrimage to Notre-Dame de Fourvière to end a devastating plague. This annual pilgrimage continues to this day.

A gilded statue of Mary was placed atop the chapel’s steeple in 1852. Its unveiling was delayed by bad weather. The Lyonnaise lit candles in their windows a spontaneous act of piety that birthed the Festival of Lights.

The basilica’s four towers represent the cardinal virtues: Fortitude Justice Prudence and Temperance. Their octagonal shape is unusual. This design caused debate among contemporaries some praised it others ridiculed it.

Inside the basilica’s lower church mosaics and sculptures tell the story of Saint Joseph. The upper church’s mosaics depict Mary’s role in both French and Church history. They even feature depictions of historical heresies. This provocative choice reflects the basilica’s complex history.

The basilica stands as a prominent landmark. Millions of visitors and pilgrims are welcomed annually. It’s a symbol of Lyon’s identity and its deep religious heritage. A place where history faith and art intertwine. The Basilique Notre-Dame de Fourvière is a place you won’t soon forget.
