“Did anyone bring binoculars?” a young boy excitedly asks his parents, pointing towards the top of the structure. High above the rooftops of Luebeck stands the Hermann-Löns-Blick, a wooden observation tower built in 1985. Though relatively new compared to Luebeck’s centuries-old landmarks, the Hermann-Löns-Blick offers a unique perspective on the city and its surroundings. From up there, you can easily trace the course of the river Trave as it winds through the city. You can also see the iconic spires of Luebeck’s churches, like seven sentinels guarding the city. But the Hermann-Löns-Blick isn’t just about stunning vistas. It’s named after Hermann Löns, a German writer known for his evocative descriptions of nature and, in particular, the heaths of northern Germany. While not directly connected to Luebeck, Löns’s appreciation for the natural world resonates with the beauty that surrounds the city. As you ascend the tower, imagine yourself in Löns’s shoes, observing the world with a keen eye and a deep appreciation for its beauty. From this vantage point, Löns would have surely found inspiration for his poetry and prose. From the top of the Hermann-Löns-Blick, Luebeck unfolds before you like a storybook. The cityscape, a tapestry woven from red-tiled roofs, green copper spires, and the shimmering blue of the Trave, is a feast for the eyes. This is a place to pause, breathe deeply, and absorb the beauty of Luebeck and the spirit of Hermann Löns before continuing your journey.
