Perched atop a gentle hill, the Wasserturm Eckhorst stands sentinel over the landscape. Isn’t it a striking figure against the sky? This isn’t just any water tower. The Wasserturm Eckhorst has played a vital role in the history of this area. Built in 1936-37, the Wasserturm Eckhorst was designed by Franz Löwitsch. It originally served the essential function of providing water to Stockelsdorf, Groß Steinrade, and Eckhorst itself. Imagine the community’s reliance on this structure, ensuring a steady supply of water to homes and businesses. Its sturdy, cube-like form, clad in red brick, housed a 250 cubic meter water tank. The design, with its rows of windows, is remarkably functional, a testament to the practical needs it served. The Wasserturm Eckhorst stands as one of the last water towers built before modern pumping technology rendered these towering structures largely obsolete in the flat regions of Northern Germany. By the late 1950s, a growing population demanded more water than the Wasserturm Eckhorst could provide. A new waterworks and pressure vessel system were installed, and the tower was decommissioned in 1959. It stood silent for a time, a monument to a bygone era. But its story didn’t end there. In 1992, architect Jochen Schrader reimagined the Wasserturm Eckhorst, transforming it into a unique residential building. The original windows were enlarged and enclosed with glass, creating balcony-like extensions that offer stunning views. Today, the Wasserturm Eckhorst is home to eight apartments, a testament to its adaptability and enduring presence. It’s more than just a building; it’s a landmark, a symbol of Eckhorst, and a fascinating blend of history and modern living.
