On June 13 2004 a new chapter began for Konigsfeld. Three independent villages Bulow Demern and Gross Runz united. They formed the municipality of Konigsfeld. This wasn’t just a merger of land. It was a merging of histories.

Konigsfeld’s name itself is quite recent. It’s taken from a small section of the former Demern community. The Konigsfeld we know today is a relatively young entity. Before 2004 it didn’t exist. It’s a blend of older histories.

Long before 2004 however these villages had deep roots. Records from 1230 mention them in the Ratzeburg tithe register. Bulow played a particularly important role. It was the ancestral home of the von Bulow family. They were major benefactors of the Rehna nunnery during the Middle Ages. Their legacy shapes Konigsfeld to this day.

The area’s geography is also fascinating. Konigsfeld stretches across hilly terrain. This sits between the Maurine and Radegast river valleys. Near Krim the highest point reaches 74 meters above sea level. Woitendorf in the southwest is part of the Schaalsee Biosphere Reserve. It includes the Woitendorf bog. Konigsfeld sits roughly halfway between Schwerin and Lubeck.

Beyond its history and geography Konigsfeld offers sights to see. Ancient monuments exist in the south. These include a large stone grave 5500 years old and a burial mound roughly 4000 years old. Demern’s church a 13th-century Petrikirche is impressive. In Bulow the Kastanienhof boasts a Low German hall house from 1851. It also features a historic kitchen garden. Gross Runz is known for its annual wheelbarrow race. The race takes place through the village pond. It’s an unusual but popular event.

Konigsfeld’s story is a tapestry woven from many threads. Each village brought unique stories. These were merged into a new identity. The people of Konigsfeld carry the combined heritage. This blend of history and community is what makes this place special. Today Konigsfeld is more than just the sum of its parts. It’s a vibrant community built on a rich and unique past.
