In 1485 a Lübeck prayer book first mentioned Blocksberg. That’s right here before you. This unassuming hill held a dark secret. For centuries Blocksberg was more than just a hill. It was a place of fear and mystery. It was whispered to be a meeting place for witches.

Blocksberg’s name itself gives a clue. “Block” or “Klotz” meant witch in old German. Blocksberg was one of many hills across Europe associated with witchcraft. The infamous Brocken mountain in the Harz is also known as Blocksberg. This name spread through Johannes Praetorius’s 1668 book. This book cemented Blocksberg’s place in witch lore.

Imagine the fear that gripped Lübeck during witch hunts. People believed witches gathered on Blocksberg. They performed rituals under the moon. They flew on broomsticks. These stories were common during the 16th and 17th centuries. But even before that Blocksberg had an ominous reputation. Other hills in Germany were also considered witch mountains. For example the Heuberg and the Staffelberg.

The belief in Blocksberg as a witch gathering place eventually faded. Jurists like Justus Oldekop challenged these beliefs. He called them fantasies. He exposed them as superstitions. His writings helped dismantle the myth. Yet Blocksberg still holds a certain magic. It continues to intrigue us.

Today Blocksberg is a quiet hill. It may lack the wild drama of the Brocken. However its history remains fascinating. It reminds us of a time when fear and superstition reigned. It also reminds us how such beliefs can change over time. It is a part of Lübeck’s rich and complex history. A history that continues to fascinate and surprise us. So take a moment to reflect on the power of stories. The power they can have over our imaginations. And how those stories can reshape our understanding of the world around us.
