Gazing up at St. Augustine’s, one might believe it has always graced Kilburn’s skyline. But its story begins not with stone and mortar, but with a disagreement. In 1870, Richard Carr Kirkpatrick, a curate at St. Mary’s, Kilburn, found himself at odds with the newly appointed evangelical vicar. Kirkpatrick, a staunch Anglo-Catholic, sought a different path. He envisioned a church where the rich traditions of Anglo-Catholicism could flourish. Thus, St. Augustine’s was born. Kirkpatrick laid the foundation stone in 1871. The initial “iron church” soon gave way to the magnificent structure we see today. John Loughborough Pearson, a renowned architect of the Gothic Revival, designed the church. St. Augustine’s, consecrated in 1880, quickly became a beacon of Anglo-Catholic worship. The church’s grandeur earned it the nickname “The Cathedral of North London.” The soaring spire, completed in 1897, reaches over 253 feet. Inside, the nave stretches 28 feet wide with nine bays, culminating in a grand crossing. The artistry within is breathtaking. Stained glass windows by Clayton and Bell illuminate biblical narratives. A magnificent rose window depicts the Creation, while others showcase angels, English saints, and St. Augustine himself. Paintings around the nave capture Christ’s healing ministry. The chancel and sanctuary overflow with intricate carvings, depicting the Passion, Crucifixion, and Resurrection. The south transept leads to St. Michael’s Chapel. Frescoes of the Christ child adorn the Lady Chapel. St. Augustine’s has witnessed history unfold. Its interior served as a backdrop for the 1985 film “Young Sherlock Holmes.” It even stood in for a New York church in the movie “Highlander.” St. Augustine’s remains a vibrant hub of faith and community. It continues to serve its diverse congregation with a rich program of worship and outreach.
