Moore gifted it to the park in 1980, after a successful exhibition at the Serpentine Gallery. Originally, a fiberglass version of The Arch was displayed at the Forte di Belvedere in Florence in 1972. Transporting heavy bronze or marble proved too difficult. So, Moore created this permanent travertine version for Kensington Gardens. This durable material ensures its longevity. He loved how it reflected in the Long Water. In 1996, The Arch was found to be unstable. It was carefully dismantled and stored. Then, it was restored and returned to its original location in 2012. Moore himself once commented that many people mistook the original fiberglass cast for marble. He saw The Arch as a natural fit for Kensington Gardens.
