Standing in front of the imposing St Yeghiche Armenian Church, one might not immediately recognize its unique history. It wasn’t always the grand centre of Armenian faith in Britain that it is today. Built in 1867 as St Peter’s Anglican Church, it housed a different congregation for decades. The church was a testament to Charles James Freake, a successful developer who built the church after moving to the area with his family. His widow later lived in one of the houses adjacent to the church.

But times change. In 1973, Anglican services ceased, paving the way for a new chapter. The building was declared redundant and, after sitting empty for a while, was purchased by a benefactor in 1998. The Armenian Orthodox Church was excited to get their hands on the majestic building and after restoration, with additions to accommodate the Armenian Divine Liturgy, it was consecrated to St Yeghiche. The church now stands as a symbol of resilience, a testament to the ability of faith to endure even in the face of change. It provides a welcoming space for the Armenian community in London, a place to reconnect with their roots and celebrate their rich history.
