“A palace fit for a prime minister” the guidebook proclaimed. But does anyone actually live here? The elegant Palacete de São Bento stands before us. It has served as the official residence of Portugal’s prime minister since 1938. This grand neoclassical mansion has witnessed history unfold.

The Palacete de São Bento wasn’t always a politician’s home. It was built in 1877 for capitalist Joaquim Machado Cayres. He chose a plot of land once belonging to the Benedictine Monastery. This explains the connection to São Bento Palace next door, the seat of the Portuguese Parliament.

In 1928, the Palacete de São Bento took on a new role. The newly established authoritarian regime saw its potential as the prime minister’s residence. Extensive renovations followed, including a monumental staircase designed by architect Cristino da Silva. This connected the mansion’s grounds to the parliament gardens.

Intriguingly, not all prime ministers have chosen to reside here. Only a handful have made the Palacete de São Bento their home. Among them was António de Oliveira Salazar, who resided here from 1938 to 1970. Today, the Palacete de São Bento stands as a symbol of power and history. It offers a glimpse into the world of Portuguese politics, but also whispers of its elegant past.
