The Escola Superior de Comunicação Social or ESCS is part of the Instituto Politécnico de Lisboa. It focuses on preparing students for careers in communication. The school offers programs in Audiovisual and Multimedia. It also provides education in Journalism, Advertising and Marketing, and Public Relations. ESCS was established by decree-law in 1979. Initially, it was named Journalism School. Its designation evolved into ESCS in 1989. The school began its activity in 1987. A founding Committee was appointed. ESCS was the first state school in Portugal to offer degrees in these scientific areas.

ESCS aims to prepare future generations. These generations will be capable of strategic intervention in organizational environments. This is achieved through systematic communication planning. Students learn to execute tasks and projects. They understand why they are doing them and how to do them. The school also enriches existing knowledge on communication subjects. ESCS President and Vice-President visit the University of Macau. The goal is to create bridges at the level of Research and Internationalization. Catarina Araújo understood how she could apply her creativity. She did this through contact with the different aspects of Audiovisual and Multimedia. Currently, she is Creative Art Director at Uzina. The European Commission funds a project called “Artificial Intelligence in Higher Education”. ESCS joins three foreign Higher Education institutions. ESCS raised the Green Eco-Schools Flag. This marked its 35th anniversary. This refers to the academic year 2023/24. It also awarded the Impulso Jovens STEAM incentive grants.
