Imagine sailors queuing here. They waited patiently with barrels marked with their ship’s ID. This is the Chafariz de São Paulo. It is more than just a fountain. It’s a historical landmark with tales of maritime Lisbon.

The Chafariz de São Paulo graces the center of the Praça de São Paulo. The square is in the Misericórdia district. Look around you. Notice how the fountain is framed by Pombaline buildings and the Igreja de São Paulo. Its location wasn’t accidental. The Chafariz de São Paulo was carefully planned.

The Chafariz de São Paulo’s story began long before its inauguration. From the 17th to the 19th centuries many plans to build a fountain were made. The goal was to supply water to the São Paulo neighborhood.

Finally in 1848 architect Malaquias Ferreira Leal designed the fountain. In 1849 the Chafariz de São Paulo was inaugurated. The design echoed an 18th-century plan by D. Miguel Ângelo de Blasco.

Observe the obelisk shape of the Chafariz de São Paulo. It stands on a platform that can be accessed by stairs. A quadrangular pyramid rises at the center topped with an iron armillary sphere.

Four spouts pour water into lobed tanks. Look closely at the Renaissance-inspired masks. They add a touch of artistry to the functional design of the Chafariz de São Paulo.

A medallion displays Lisbon’s coat of arms carved in bas-relief. An inscription reads “MARITIMOS.” This marks a spout for the exclusive use of sailors. Since the beginning of its construction this was pre-established.

The Chafariz de São Paulo addressed a pressing need. Locals complained that the Chafariz da Esperança was too far away. The construction cost 3:204$895 réis.

From February 26 1850 one spout served sailors. They brought barrels labeled with their ship’s letter and number. In 1851 there were four spouts. There were also two water carrier companies two foremen and bosses and sixty-six water carriers.

The EPAL company celebrates 150 years in 2018. This highlights the importance of water supply to Lisbon. Fountains like the Chafariz de São Paulo were essential to this network. These routes show a transforming Lisbon.

The Chafariz do Carmo’s construction began in 1769. It became popular with water carriers. The Câmara de Lisboa considered demolishing it in 1875.

The Chafariz do Intendente was built between 1823 and 1824. It was moved in 1917 due to traffic. The Aqueduto das Águas Livres supplied its water.

The Chafariz de São Pedro de Alcântara was never completed. The 1755 earthquake damaged it. The current fountain has a marble tank from the Paço Real da Bemposta.

The Chafariz de São Paulo stands as a testament to Lisbon’s history. It shows how the city provided for its people. Its design reflects artistic influences and practical needs.
