Remarkable engineering meets vital necessity at the Aqueduto das Águas Livres. This aqueduct stands as a testament to Lisbon’s resilience. Built in the 18th century it provided the city with a reliable water source. Let’s delve into its story.

King ordered its construction between 1731 and 1799. The Aqueduto das Águas Livres is a vast system. It collects and transports water using gravity. Since 1910 it has been a National Monument. Many consider this a remarkable work of hydraulic engineering.

The Aqueduto das Águas Livres uses water springs. These springs are integrated in the Sintra mountain range. This basin is in the Belas region northwest of Lisbon.

Interestingly the chosen path aligns with an old Roman aqueduct. Funding came from a special tax. Essential goods like olive oil wine and meat were taxed. This was called the “Water Royal” duty.

The system proved its strength by withstanding the 1755 earthquake. The Aqueduto das Águas Livres comprises several key parts. A main section stretches 14 km. It runs from Mâe de Água Velha in Belas. It ends at the Mâe de Água das Amoreiras reservoir in Lisbon. Secondary sections transport water from about 60 sources. Five galleries supply roughly 30 fountains in the capital.

In total the Aqueduto das Águas Livres system extended about 58 km. This was in the mid-19th century both inside and outside Lisbon. However its waters were no longer for human consumption after the 1960s.

The arches of the Alcântara valley are truly extraordinary. They span 941 meters. These arches include the world’s largest stone arch of its kind. It stands 65.29 m high and 28.86 m wide.

Today the Water Museum promotes tours. Free guided tours are available. These tours explore the arches in the Alcântara valley.

The Aqueduto das Águas Livres remains a symbol of Lisbon’s engineering prowess. Exploring this historical site offers panoramic views. Walking along the aqueduct path gives a unique city perspective.
