Feel the cool spray of the fountain. This is the Evocação do 25 de Abril de 1974 Obelisk. It stands as a powerful reminder. A reminder of the Carnation Revolution.
The year is 1997. Twenty-three years after the revolution. This monument was unveiled. It celebrates the momentous events of April 25th 1974. A day that forever changed Portugal. Before this day Portugal was one of Europe’s poorest nations. A harsh dictatorship stifled the economy. Colonial wars drained resources.
But hope flickered. In 1973 a secret society formed. The Movimento das Forças Armadas MFA or Movement of Armed Forces. These brave army officers aimed to overthrow the regime. Their plan was daring.
On April 25th 1974 rebel soldiers seized power. The government fell. The people rejoiced. Red carnations. Symbols of peace and revolution adorned soldiers’ rifles and pockets. The streets erupted in celebration. The Carnation Revolution a bloodless coup had succeeded.
The Lisbon City Council commissioned the creation of this obelisk. Sculptor João Cutileiro designed it. It’s a stunning piece. A 90-ton block of red marble dominates the center. Two white marble columns flank it. A gray and red marble carnation rests between the columns. The whole structure sits in a pool. The old Estado Novo monument’s partially destroyed base is visible in the water.
The obelisk itself is striking. Its six-meter-high form is undeniably phallic. Cutileiro explained it symbolizes the courage of the revolutionaries. It sparked heated debate. Yet it stands as a powerful symbol of a new era. A new political and cultural dawn.
From the Miradouro do Parque Eduardo VII observation deck. You get a spectacular view. The monument sits proudly. A testament to the courage of those who fought for freedom. For democracy. It’s more than just a monument. It’s a symbol. A symbol of hope and renewal. A symbol of a nation reborn. It continues to inspire generations. The Evocação do 25 de Abril de 1974 Obelisk stands as a tribute. A tribute to the brave souls. The souls who dared to dream of a better Portugal. A Portugal finally free.
