This isn’t just any reservoir. This is the Mãe d’Água the Mother of Water. It’s the culmination of the Águas Livres Aqueduct. A breathtaking 18th-century engineering feat. Designed initially by the Hungarian architect Carlos Mardel in 1746 it took almost a century to complete. Reinaldo Manuel dos Santos oversaw the final stages. It was finally finished in 1834.

The reservoir itself is a stunning sight. It’s a colossal structure. Its central tank is 7.5 meters deep. It holds an impressive 5500 cubic meters of water. Imagine the scale. Imagine the sheer effort needed to build it.

Climb onto the flat roof. You’ll be rewarded with breathtaking panoramic views. You can see across Lisbon. You can even see the River Tagus in the distance. It’s a truly spectacular viewpoint.

This wasn’t just for practicality. The Mãe d’Água das Amoreiras was also a place of celebration. It was even used for the wedding festivities of Dom Luís I and Dona Maria Pia of Savoy. A royal celebration in a remarkable setting.

Nearby stands the Casa do Registo. The Register House. It controlled the water flow. It directed the precious liquid to Lisbon’s fountains factories convents and palaces. A testament to the city’s water management.

Today the Mãe d’Água das Amoreiras doesn’t supply water to Lisbon. It is a National Monument since 1910. It’s a museum a testament to Lisbon’s history and ingenuity. A cool and serene space.
