Ever wondered about the journey of a fountain? The Chafariz do Intendente’s story is one of relocation and resilience. Right before you stands this remarkable structure. Initially built between 1823 and 1824 it was originally located in Largo do Intendente near the Viúva Lamego Ceramic Factory. Imagine the bustling activity surrounding it then. Workers from the factory the townsfolk all coming to collect water. The Chafariz do Intendente was more than just a water source. It was a vital part of the community’s life.
Its creation wasn’t without its challenges. Several design proposals were rejected before the final one was accepted in 1823. The project cost a significant amount of money. 8 862$668 réis to be exact. People were even asked to donate materials like stone pipes and lime for its construction.
However in 1917 the Chafariz do Intendente was moved. The increasing traffic especially electric trams necessitated its relocation. It found its current home on Rua da Palma. This new location placed it between Calçada do Desterro and Rua Nova do Desterro. Its front now faces Rua da Palma still keeping a watchful eye on Largo do Intendente its original home.
The Chafariz do Intendente faced another hurdle in 1931. Its water source the Bica do Regueirão dos Anjos became contaminated. The water was diverted to the sewage system. The fountain then relied on the public water network. Amazingly the Chafariz do Intendente continues to stand. Its crown which had been removed after the implementation of the Republic in 1910 was restored in the 1990s.
Even a nearby public trough called Taça do Intendente supplied water to animals. It delivered sulfurated calcareous water. People even used it for its supposed digestive benefits. They devised a simple system using a cane to drink the water. This trough was deactivated in the 1950s or 1960s due to water infiltration.
