What secrets does the wind whisper as it dances through the Samina Valley, here at Sücka? I’ll tell you a tale of this unique alp, nestled in the heart of Liechtenstein, within the municipality of Triesenberg. Sücka, or Sügga in the local dialect, is more than just a picturesque spot. It holds a special place in Liechtenstein’s history. Originally a cow pasture, Sücka sits just west of Rotenboden, on the road leading to Steg and Malbun, with the Samina River flowing nearby. In 1887, the people of Triesenberg purchased Sücka from Prince Johann II. This act cemented Sücka’s importance within the community. Before this, the alp served the princely estate. The name Sücka first appeared in records in 1509, referred to as the Triesner Alp. By 1617, it was recognized as a manorial property. Imagine Sücka in the late 19th century, a hub of activity. Around 1870, the alpine buildings weren’t just for farming. They were also used as a whey and air training center, making Sücka an early tourist destination in Liechtenstein. This development was further spurred by road construction, including the Kulm footbridge in 1867/1868. After the municipality acquired Sücka, the buildings were renovated. The “Kurhaus,” a central building on the alp, underwent significant refurbishment, further enhancing Sücka’s appeal. Sücka is more than just a name on a map. It’s a testament to the ingenuity and community spirit of the people of Triesenberg. It’s a blend of traditional alpine life and the burgeoning tourism industry of the time. While currently closed for renovations, Sücka continues to evolve, promising new experiences for visitors in the future. The story of Sücka echoes through the valley, a reminder of a rich past and a bright future.
