Isn’t it fascinating how a region can evolve from ancient roots to a modern constituency? This is the story of Wahlkreis Sarganserland. It is a place where history echoes through valleys and shapes today’s political landscape.

Wahlkreis Sarganserland is located in the canton of St. Gallen. It is more than just an administrative unit. It is a region with a distinct identity and a rich past. Wahlkreis Sarganserland mirrors the former district of Sargans. This area stretches across the southernmost part of St. Gallen.

From 1460 to 1798, the Sarganserland was a common territory. It was part of the Old Swiss Confederacy. Between 1803 and 2002, it was the southernmost district. It was part of the canton of St. Gallen. In 2003, the region transformed into a Wahlkreis. It includes the municipalities of Sargans and Vilters-Wangs. Also Bad Ragaz, Pfäfers, Mels, Flums, Walenstadt and Quarten.

The identity of Wahlkreis Sarganserland stems from its history. It was once the County of Sargans and the Landvogtei Sargans. This region has maintained its unique character over centuries.

Early plans for a separate canton dissolved during the Helvetic Republic. In 1803, the Sarganserland joined the newly formed canton of St. Gallen. Despite this, the area remains a politically strong region. The Kloster Pfäfers was a religious center until 1838. Since 1847, the Sarganserland has belonged to the new Diocese of St. Gallen.

Until the 19th century, livestock farming was the main source of income. The opening of the Chur–St. Margrethen railway in 1858 changed things. The Ziegelbrücke–Sargans route followed in 1859. This led to a decline in traditional transport. Mining was also important. Iron ore was extracted on the Gonzen until 1966. The textile industry gained importance in the mid-19th century.

During World War II, the army built the Sargans Fortress. In 1954, the Sarganserländer Talgemeinschaft was founded. It supports regional interests. The Kantonsschule Sargans opened in 1963 thanks to this community. The A3 and A13 motorways improved transport links. They connected Zurich and St. Gallen. The Kraftwerke Sarganserland storage plant was built between 1971 and 1978.

Today, the Wahlkreis Sarganserland is known for its blend of tradition and progress. The valley floor between Mels and Bad Ragaz is popular among commuters. Real estate prices have increased. Many residents work in Zurich or Liechtenstein. The A3 motorway and SBB Intercity trains provide good connections.

The health sector is the largest employer. It includes the Psychiatric Clinic Pfäfers and the Valens and Walenstadtberg rehabilitation clinics. Also the Walenstadt Hospital. The region fought to keep the Walenstadt Hospital open.

Sargans serves as the geographic and administrative center. It has been an important town since the 13th century. Mels has a larger population. It features a large shopping center. Bad Ragaz boasts international appeal with its Grand Resort. The Flumserberg is a significant winter sports area.

The Sarganserland is considered grounded and conservative. The Christian Democrats’ share of votes nearly halved between 2004 and 2016. The FDP’s share slightly increased. The SVP has remained steady since 2004. The Greens gained a seat in 2024. They were in a joint list with the Green Liberals.

As you stand here, consider the layers of history. Consider the cultural shifts that have shaped this Wahlkreis. The story of Wahlkreis Sarganserland is a testament to resilience. It is a story of community and the enduring spirit of its people.
