The story of Bezirk Bludenz is a saga of power and shifting allegiances. Once royal lands it passed from the Counts of Bregenz to the powerful Counts of Montfort. Then around 1258 the Counts of Werdenberg-Heiligenberg acquired it transforming Bludenz into a thriving city by the next decade. In 1394 it was sold and by 1420 it was under Habsburg rule.
From the imposing Bludenz Castle Vögte administered the city the Montafon region and from 1474 the Sonnenberg county. Two Vögte belonged to the Ramschwag family serving also at Gutenberg Castle. Strong ties to Liechtenstein existed through citizen families and the St Peter monastery.
Bludenz’s livestock markets gained regional fame in the early modern period. Then the 19th century brought rapid industrialization particularly in textiles. Since 1872 a railway has connected Bezirk Bludenz to Liechtenstein creating an enduring bond between the two.
