“All of you but one may leave the meadow.” Those words still echo through the Valorschtal Valley. We are standing before Alp Guschg. For centuries, this Alpine meadow has been a place of hard work and ancient legends.

Alp Guschg is more than just a picturesque spot high in the Liechtenstein mountains. It is a place where the veil between reality and folklore thins. The story of the Guschg Herdsmen’s Doll is deeply rooted here. It is a cautionary tale passed down through generations.

Up here in Guschg, herdsmen once spent their lonely hours crafting a doll from rags. They treated her like a companion talking to her and sharing their meals. But their actions took a dark turn. They mistreated the doll.

As autumn approached, the doll came to life. She spoke with a chilling voice. She decreed that only one herdsman must remain with her. The others were allowed to take the cows down to the valley. Imagine the fear. The remaining herdsmen glanced back as they descended into the Valorschtal Valley. A horrifying sight greeted them. The skin of their fellow herdsman was stretched across the roof of their mountain hut. The doll sat nearby laughing.

This legend serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of disrespect and cruelty. The story is widespread throughout the Alpine region. It is a local version of the Swiss “Sennentuntschi” tale.

Alp Guschg itself is a testament to tradition and community. The Alpgenossenschaft Guschg was founded in 1503. Since then it has managed 583.4 hectares of Alpine land. The area stretches between 1100 and 2286 meters above sea level.

Today, Alp Guschg is one of four Alps in Liechtenstein. It produces its own Alpine products like cheese, yogurt and butter. You can hike here from Malbun in about two hours. The somewhat remote Alp Guschg has no electricity, telephone, or internet connection.

The Alpgenossenschaft is responsible for maintaining the pastures. It also manages the forests and infrastructure. Members of the cooperative carry out this work.

When you visit Alp Guschg you are not just witnessing a beautiful landscape. You are stepping into a world of legends. The story of the herdsman’s doll is a chilling reminder of the past. It also speaks of the importance of respect and the enduring power of folklore.
