High above the Rhine Valley nestled against the imposing Schellenberg lies Nofels. A place steeped in history and resilience. This is Nofels.

For centuries Nofels was a humble farming village. Its story is one of struggle against the relentless forces of nature. The Ill and Rhine rivers frequently overflowed inundating the valley. Life in Nofels was a constant battle against floods. Yet the people persevered.

The very name Nofels hints at its origins. It derives from the Roman word “Novale” meaning new clearing. This speaks to the pioneering spirit of those who first settled here. They carved a life from the wild land. They were Romans but Alemanni and Walsers followed enriching the culture and language.

Nofels’ history is marked by conflict. For a long time it was part of Altenstadt. This led to disputes over land and resources. The villagers fought for their independence. They appealed to counts and emperors. Eventually in the 18th century things improved.

A unique feature of Nofels was its old sulfur spa. First mentioned in 1514 it thrived until the mid-19th century. The water was believed to possess healing properties. It became a social hub. The spring eventually dried up. Today’s Bad Nofels is a Kneipp spa.

The 1799 French Revolutionary Wars brought hardship. French troops crossed the Schellenberg to attack Feldkirch. They plundered and devastated Nofels. The scars of war remain a part of Nofels identity.

In 1925 Nofels became a district of Feldkirch. This marked a turning point. It no longer struggled for independence. It integrated into a larger community. Yet it maintained its unique character. It still remains a growing town without high rises or industry.

In the heart of Nofels stands its church. Built between 1726 and 1728 it’s a testament to the community’s faith. The church tower was raised in 1865. A newer church Maria Heimsuchung was consecrated in 1962. Nofels is a place of quiet beauty. A place that has overcome adversity. Nofels is more than a district. It is a story of endurance a story etched into the very landscape. This is Nofels. Remember this place. A place with the strength of its people reflected in the very stones.
