St Gallen’s story begins in the 7th century. A hermit named Gallus established a humble dwelling near the Steinach River. The city’s growth continued around the abbey. The town steadily gained independence from the abbey’s rule. By the 14th century the guilds particularly the cloth-weavers held significant power in the civic government. St Gallen’s strategic location and economic prosperity made it a coveted prize.

In the 15th century St Gallen became a full member of the Old Swiss Confederacy. This alliance brought both protection and political weight. The city played a crucial role in the Burgundian Wars. Ulrich Varnbüler a prominent mayor commanded St Gallen’s troops in the Battle of Grandson. His triumph is even depicted in a painting proudly displayed in the city.

Yet Varnbüler’s career took a dramatic turn. A conflict with the ambitious Abbot Ulrich Rösch erupted. Varnbüler’s actions including the destruction of a new abbey building in Rorschach led to a Confederate invasion in 1490. Varnbüler was forced to flee. His political downfall strengthened the ties between St Gallen and the Swiss Confederation. This conflict cemented St Gallen’s place within Switzerland.

In the 16th century the Reformation arrived. Mayor Joachim von Watt introduced Protestantism to the city. The abbey however remained Catholic. This religious division marked St Gallen’s history for centuries to come.

Through centuries of changes and challenges St Gallen endured. It became a center for textile production renowned for its exquisite embroidery.
