“Zäwas!” echoes through the mountains. This is how locals greet each other. The Zäwas-Heil Spitze stands proudly. Have you ever wondered where its unique name comes from?

Let’s uncover the story of the Zäwas-Heil Spitze. It is more than just a mountain peak. It is a landmark steeped in local tradition.

Zäwas-Heil Spitze is in the Rätikon range. It is part of the Galina Group. The mountain lies between Frastanz and Nenzing. These are market towns in Vorarlberg, Austria.

The name Zäwasheilspitz combines local greetings. “Zäwas!” is a common greeting. It is like “Hello everyone!” or “Greetings!”. Some say it comes from “Servus!” to “Seawas!” to “Zäwas!”. “Heil!” means “Greetings!” or “Good luck!”. The “-spitz” part simply means mountain peak.

The Zäwas-Heil Spitze’s height varies slightly in records. It is around 1778 meters above sea level. Some sources list it as 1770, 1773, 1777, or 1784 meters.

Is Zäwas-Heil Spitze its own peak? Or is it part of the nearby Gurtisspitze? They are only 170 meters apart. This is debated. Official maps rarely mention Zäwas-Heil Spitze. Hikers often use the name. A sign at the private summit cross reads: “Zäwas Heil Bergheil.”

The Zäwas-Heil Spitze is a prominent feature. It is part of the Galina Group. This group extends to Frastanz. One of its last rises is the Stutzberg.

The area is full of dense grass. You will also see shrubs and fir trees. The peak itself is mostly free of plants. It offers amazing views all around.

Nearby peaks include Gurtisspitze to the northeast. Spitztäleispitz lies southwest. Goppaschrofen is also nearby. The Sattelalpe is a bit further.

Hikers can easily reach Zäwas-Heil Spitze. Good trails lead to it. It is close to the main hiking path. A longer hike can include Gurtisspitze. You can also reach Spitztälispitz and Goppaschrofen. Experienced hikers can continue to the Hohe Köpfe.

The closest place to rest is Sattelalpe. It is open in summer. Other nearby Alps are also open only in summer. Climbing Zäwas-Heil Spitze requires sure footing. Good shoes are a must. Even children can hike it with experienced adults.

Erich DeCet, M. Kuster, and C. Lanbach privately built the summit cross. “Maria Hilf” is written on its crossbar. “2006” is on the long part. The cross can even be lit up.

As you stand here remember the greetings. “Zäwas!” represents community. “Heil!” wishes you well. The Zäwas-Heil Spitze embodies the spirit of these mountains. It connects hikers with nature and local tradition.
