Do you see that imposing stone monument? That’s the Rheindenkmal. It stands as a silent testament to a devastating event. A dark chapter in Liechtenstein’s history. A catastrophic flood.

The Rheindenkmal wasn’t always here. It wasn’t always surrounded by a planned nature oasis either. In 1927 disaster struck. The Rhine dam broke near Schaan. The resulting floodwaters engulfed much of the community and the northern valley floor. The devastation was immense. A field of destruction remained. Yet from this destruction came an outpouring of aid.

Swiss and Austrian soldiers and numerous volunteers rushed to help. Their selfless efforts saved Liechtenstein from utter ruin. Financially the impoverished country couldn’t repay this kindness. They chose a more enduring form of gratitude. A memorial in stone.

In 1933 a massive 250-centner gneiss block was moved with great effort. It was brought from Planken. Its location north of the old Zollstrasse was chosen carefully. The inscription carved by sculptor Gottfried Hilti speaks volumes. It reads: “In memory of the great Rhine catastrophe of September 25 1927. Thanks to all the noble helpers and donors in need. The communities of Liechtenstein.”

Initially the Rheindenkmal stood amidst a beautiful tree-lined street. Fruit trees and bushes adorned the area. But progress had its price. Increased traffic led to road widening and relocation. The Rheindenkmal was moved to its current location. The improved road spurred economic growth. But it came at the expense of nature.

Now things are changing. Schaan’s “Schaan greens” vision brings nature back into the village. The Rheindenkmal’s surroundings are the focus. The goal? A diverse natural landscape resembling the past. The small park around the Rheindenkmal will provide a habitat for animals.

The Rheindenkmal will sit on a clearing surrounded by water. Birch and alder trees symbolize the flood’s power. An interpretive path tells the story of the catastrophe. The monument will have a worthy place. It will symbolize its history. A fitting tribute to the past. A serene space to remember. A testament to the human spirit’s resilience. And to the enduring power of nature.
