Founded in 1935, the Kloster St. Elisabeth stands as a testament to faith and service. It is a beautiful building. The monastery brings comfort and relaxation to visitors.

In 1920, a community of ASC sisters resided in Haus Gutenberg in Balzers. Fifteen years later, they moved to Schaan. The move was to the newly constructed Kloster St. Elisabeth. The Austrian architect Arthur Wander designed it.

From 1942 to 1946, the Schaan monastery ran a girls’ gymnasium. Afterward, from 1946 to 1976, it became a higher girls’ school. From 1976, it was a secondary school.

Throughout the Second World War, the sisters of Kloster St. Elisabeth held public prayers every evening. The prayer was for peace. In 1957, new school buildings were built north of the main building.

From their arrival in Schaan until 1987, the sisters also ran a domestic science school. From 1949 to 1967, they managed the women’s section of the Laurentiusbad. From 1957, they took over the management.

In 1989, the congregation decided to relinquish leadership of the secondary school. The goal was to focus on evangelization. In 1993, the government transformed the girls’ school into a state-run secondary school. Boys and girls could attend.

Since 2003, the monastic community has been offering pastoral services. This is in collaboration with an open church association. The project is named “Brot und Rosen”.

Today, Kloster St. Elisabeth continues its mission. It offers seminars, tours, and lectures. These cover the monastery’s history and importance. Visiting on Sundays is especially rewarding. Prayers create a serene atmosphere. The nuns provide insight into the building’s spiritual character. The monastery is family-friendly. It is accessible to wheelchair users. The Kloster St. Elisabeth remains a place of reflection. It is a beacon of faith in Schaan.
