Hidden high on the Maria Ebene plateau, the Kapelle Maria Ebene has witnessed centuries of stories unfold. This chapel, dedicated to the image of Mariahilf, isn’t just a place of worship. It’s a testament to the resilience and faith of the Frastanz community. The story of Kapelle Maria Ebene begins long before the charming structure we see today existed. In 1611, a simple shrine was erected nearby. It was a symbol of gratitude for surviving the devastating plague. This humble beginning paved the way for something greater. As the community grew, so did their devotion. A small shelter was added in 1780. Then, between 1825 and 1826, the old shrine was replaced with the Kapelle Maria Ebene. The chapel we admire today. The year 1828 marked its official inauguration, a joyous moment for the people of Frastanz. Over the years, Kapelle Maria Ebene continued to evolve. Side altars were added, the nave expanded, and a tower and sacristy were constructed in 1877. A clock, gifted by a generous textile factory owner, found its home in the tower in 1889. Inside, the chapel holds treasures that whisper tales of the past. A high altar from the late 17th century, older than the chapel itself, commands attention. Its centerpiece is the Mariahilf image, depicting a bridge and a castle. Above, God the Father watches over all, a figure crafted by Erasmus Kern around 1640. The right choir arch displays a 1671 painting of St. Martin. Carved wooden Stations of the Cross, created in the late 19th century, guide worshippers on a spiritual journey. In 1999, Kapelle Maria Ebene gained a new title. It became the Peace Chapel, commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Battle of Frastanz. A peace path was created, leading visitors to this tranquil sanctuary. Today, as you stand before Kapelle Maria Ebene, you’re not just admiring a building. You’re connecting with the enduring spirit of Frastanz, a community that has found solace and strength within these sacred walls.
