Perched high above the Vaduz, overlooking the valley, are the haunting ruins of Schalun Castle. Locals often refer to it as “Wildschloss,” meaning “Castle in the wild”. This nickname perfectly captures its rugged charm and air of mystery. The first written record of Schalun Castle appears in 1237, although its construction likely dates back to the late 12th century. Unlike its grander counterpart, Vaduz Castle, Schalun Castle is a ruin. However, this only adds to its allure.

As you explore the crumbling walls and towers, you’re walking through centuries of history. Archaeological digs have revealed surprisingly few artifacts from the medieval and early modern periods. This suggests that Schalun Castle might have suffered a deliberate clearing and burning, erasing much of its past. Despite its ruined state, certain features of Schalun Castle still impress. The remnants of the grand hall hint at past feasts and gatherings. The weathered stones of the keep, once the heart of the castle’s defenses, still stand defiant against the passage of time.

Interestingly, in the 18th century, Schalun Castle came into the possession of the reigning Prince of Liechtenstein. This speaks to the historical significance of the castle. However, in 1933, ownership was transferred to the Municipality of Vaduz. Today, you, the visitor, can freely explore this “Castle in the wild.” As you stand on the precipice, gazing out over the valley, let your imagination paint a picture of Schalun Castle in its prime. A time of knights and nobles, of feasts and battles, a silent sentinel guarding the valley below.
