Does the name Schattenburg mean anything to you? The name Schattenburg comes from “schatte, schad”. It means “protection, shield”. We are standing before Schattenburg, a castle with a rich history.

Schattenburg is in Feldkirch, Vorarlberg, Austria. It stands 480 meters above sea level. Hugo I of Montfort, the founder of Feldkirch, built it around 1200. He wanted to secure traffic through the mountain routes.

The Dukes of Montfort lived here until 1390. Then, the Habsburgs bought the castle. In 1825, the city of Feldkirch acquired Schattenburg. They paid over 800 guilders for it. That was the price of eight good tournament horses.

The castle has seen wars and damage over the years. But Schattenburg has been constantly renovated. Today, it is one of the best-preserved medieval castles in Central Europe.

Look at the 21-meter battlements. Imagine the keep, moats, and drawbridges. The thick walls provided strong defense. These were the first parts constructed.

Notice the inner courtyard of Schattenburg. Restored wooden battlements and half-timbered buildings were added in the 13th century. Leaded windows and heraldic devices decorate the Knights Room. It’s now a popular restaurant. You can also find a cellar and the castle museum here.

Step inside the Schattenburg museum. It has eighteen rooms on three floors. Each room shows a different part of Feldkirch’s history. You can see weapons from the Middle Ages to World War II. They are on display in the castle guard.

In 2017, over 30,000 people visited the museum. The Schattenburg offers stunning views of Feldkirch from its height.
