Fancy a trip back in time? Right here before us stands the Iglesia El Laborío. It is one of León’s oldest churches. Its story began in 1618. King Felipe III of Spain ordered its construction. The church was built in the town of “los naboríos”. This is the same location where it stands today.
In the 17th century, Iglesia San Nicolás de Tolentino formed the heart of a community. This community housed “los naboríos”. “Los naboríos” were indigenous people. During the colonial era, they worked exclusively in Spanish residences. They were domestic servants.
The church’s original interventions remain somewhat unknown. Yet the current facade differs greatly from the original. However, the main body and presbytery remain unaltered.
Iglesia San Nicolás de Tolentino features a colonial design. It is based on a symmetrical rectangular layout. This layout maintains spatial continuity between different areas. The facades also reflect colonial styles. They showcase simplicity and plainness. This gives it a semi-rural feel. The frontispiece and towers reflect neoclassical influences. These influences are somewhat modernized. This gives the church an eclectic appearance.
The main altar was dedicated to San Nicolás de Tolentino. The missionaries placed his image there. It is still there today. San Nicolás de Tolentino was the first saint of the Order of San Agustín. He is considered the protector of souls in Purgatory. He is also an intercessor for justice, motherhood, childhood, and health. He was the patron saint of the town of los naboríos. Today he is the patron saint of Barrio El Laborío. His feast day is celebrated each year on September 10.
The neighborhood around Iglesia del Laborío was built in the 17th century. The exact construction date is not known. The facade you see today is very different from the first one. But the main part of the presbytery has remained unchanged. You can see the colonial style in its facade. Other elements show neoclassical and eclectic influences.
If you walk east, you will find the Ruinas de la Ermita de San Sebastián. You’re walking on one of the city’s earliest streets.
Masses are held here throughout the year. On Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays, mass is at 5:00 pm. On Thursdays, masses are at 6:00 am and 5:30 pm. Sundays offer masses at 7:00 am, 9:30 am, and 5:30 pm. Please remember that visits are not allowed during mass. Also, dogs are not permitted inside.
