Sulphur filled the air. “Are you sure this is safe?” one hiker whispered nervously to another as they gazed at the steaming crater of Telica. Telica Volcano, one of Nicaragua’s most active volcanoes, has captivated adventurers and scientists alike for centuries. Located in the Leon department of Nicaragua, Telica is part of a chain of volcanoes known as the Cordillera de los Maribios. Unlike its greener neighbors, Telica’s slopes remain bare, a testament to its frequent eruptions. The volcanic ash, while stark, paints a raw and powerful image against the vibrant Nicaraguan sky. Telica boasts six distinct cones, the tallest reaching over 1,036 meters high. At its peak, a massive double crater stretches 700 meters wide and plunges 120 meters deep, a constant source of smoke and intrigue. The volcano’s rumblings have been a constant companion to locals since the time of the Spanish conquistadors. One of the most significant eruptions occurred in 1529, leaving a lasting mark on the landscape. More recently, Telica experienced a period of intense activity in 1999, with ash plumes reaching a staggering 1.5 kilometers high. A lava lake even formed within the crater, a fiery spectacle visible for miles around. While Telica demands respect, its proximity to the city of Leon makes it a popular destination for seasoned hikers and curious travelers. Standing at its edge, feeling the heat radiating from the earth, one can’t help but be humbled by the raw power of nature.
