Schloss Zöbigker started as a humble manor. It evolved into the impressive castle we see today. Its story is filled with noble families, ambitious renovations, and even a “beer war”.
Back in 1376, a fellow named Dam von Pflugk owned this land. The Pflugk family expanded the estate into a proper knight’s manor by the end of the 14th century. For centuries, Schloss Zöbigker passed through different families. Each left their mark on its stones.
Friedrich Wilhelm von Marschall acquired the estate in 1678. He decided the old manor wasn’t grand enough. He tore it down and built a new manor house. It was a bold move but he ran into debt.
In 1714, Johann Jakob Kees the Younger stepped in. He was an electorally Saxon court and justice councilor. He bought the estate for 38,500 talers. That is about one million euros today. Kees had made his fortune as postmaster. He used his wealth to restore Schloss Zöbigker.
Between 1716 and 1724, Kees transformed the Schloss Zöbigker and its gardens. He hired architect David Schatz to create a baroque masterpiece. Kees also established a brewery. This led to the amusing “Zöbigker Beer War” in 1727. He built a tavern and hunting lodge too. Zöbigker was becoming quite the place to be.
Around 1840, the manor was again remodeled into a classical style. Then, in 1929, it was partially returned to its baroque form. In 1925, the Kees family sold the estate. The Sächsische Werke AG Dresden bought it for coal mining.
The family kept the manor house until 1945. The manor became home to American and later Soviet occupation troops.
Today Schloss Zöbigker has been carefully restored. It stands as a symbol of Markkleeberg’s rich heritage. The park, though altered, still hints at its original design.
