The Max Reger Plaque here marks the site of the former Hotel Hentschel. This is where Reger, a composer, Leipzig University’s music director, and professor at the Royal Conservatory, died in 1916. Reger’s connection to Leipzig was a complex mix of triumph and tribulation. Appointed to prestigious positions at the university and conservatory in 1907, he found a vibrant musical scene. Yet, he also faced harsh criticism and a lack of appreciation for his complex works, especially his organ pieces. Despite leaving Leipzig in 1911 for Meiningen, Reger maintained his teaching post at the conservatory, frequently returning to the city. He even composed the Piano Trio in E minor and premiered his Violin Concerto in A major at Leipzig’s Gewandhaus. His dedication to his students was undeniable, captivating them with passionate lectures and fostering their compositional talents. But the constant negative reviews and poorly attended concerts chipped away at his spirit. Even the success of the first German Reger Festival in 1910, which solidified his national fame, was met with a campaign of criticism from some Leipzig critics. This constant battle for recognition took a toll on his health, culminating in a breakdown. Yet, he persevered, continuing to compose and teach until his untimely death in 1916.
