Born in Bautzen in 1959 Holger Jackisch found his final resting place in Leipzig. This is where his story ends but not where it begins. Before us lies the simple grave of a man who lived a life far from simple. A writer editor and director Holger Jackisch left behind a legacy of words and sounds. His work resonates even today.

He wasn’t just a writer though. Before finding his passion for storytelling Holger Jackisch worked as a nurse and ambulance driver. He then studied engineering. He even spent three years as a construction foreman. These experiences shaped the man and the writer. They informed the stories he would later tell. They give a unique depth to his work.

His true calling was found at the Institute for Literature Johannes R Becher in Leipzig. There he honed his skills. There he discovered his voice. After graduating he became a journalist for Die andere Zeitung. Later he led the feature editorial team at Mitteldeutscher Rundfunk. That’s where he truly shone.

Holger Jackisch created compelling radio documentaries. He collaborated with talented authors. Names like Kathrin Aehnlich Paul Kohl Helmut Kopetzky Friedrich Schütze-Quest and Joachim Walther became part of his creative circle. Together they produced award-winning work. They captured the spirit of a changing Germany.

His works include prose short stories radio plays and feature stories. Many explored the complexities of German history. Some were personal reflections others were meticulously researched pieces. His award-winning radio play Tod eines deutschen Clowns is just one example of his skill. His work won him the Autorenpreis der Kritikerjury in 1988. He also won the Prix Futura in 1995. His talent was undeniable. He was a respected voice.

His death at only 42 years old was a loss. His contributions to German literature and radio are significant. His grave a quiet place of reflection. His legacy far more expansive. Here in Leipzig we remember Holger Jackisch. We remember the words he left behind. They will continue to inspire generations to come. We remember a life dedicated to storytelling. A life far too short. A life forever etched in the annals of Leipzig’s history.
