Born in the humble town of Neuschönefeld in 1861, Oscar Seifert became a Leipzig legend. Orphaned at a young age, he was raised by foster parents. He rose from his difficult beginnings to become known throughout Leipzig as “Seiferts Oscar”. Oscar Seifert, the charismatic salesman, captivated crowds with his quick wit and even quicker sales pitches. He held a permit to sell a variety of goods. During trade fairs and Christmas markets, particularly on Königsplatz, now Wilhelm-Leuschner-Platz, his booming voice filled the air. He hawked everything from suspenders and combs to yarn, pins, harmonicas, and thermoses. His salesmanship transformed mundane transactions into lively performances. One of his famous catchphrases, still echoed today, perfectly captured the spirit of the times: “Gindersch, gooft Gämme, ‘s gomm laus’sche Zeiden!” meaning “Children, buy combs, lousy times are coming!” Later in life, Oscar Seifert invested in a six-car carousel powered by an electric motor. This “Seiferts Oscar’s Magnificent Auto-Corso” became a popular attraction at the Leipzig Kleinmesse. He lived with his seven children on Elisenstraße, now Bernhard-Göring-Straße. Several of his children and grandchildren carried on his legacy in the showman business even after 1990. Oscar Seifert passed away on Christmas Day, 1932, leaving behind a legacy of laughter and lively salesmanship in the heart of Leipzig. He is buried in the Südfriedhof.
