Gazing upon Kirche Mölkau, one might initially see a simple, elegant church. But beneath its serene facade lies a story spanning centuries. Kirche Mölkau stands as a testament to the passage of time and the enduring spirit of the community it serves. The church we see today takes its name from the surrounding village, once part of the Zweinaundorfer Rittergut. In 1614, Johannes Scipio, then lord of the manor, commissioned the construction of a modest Baroque church. Years later, in 1706, Dr. Johann Friedrich Scipio oversaw its partial demolition and reconstruction. The church then underwent a significant transformation in 1906 thanks to Dr. Wilhelm Seeger-Kelbe. He reshaped its interior and gave the church its present exterior form. Even amidst the hardships of the DDR era, Kirche Mölkau received a much-needed renovation in 1964. Though limited by resources, the community brightened the interior with a simple coat of paint and installed new red pews. More recently, in 2012, the church underwent restoration, revealing a vibrant new painting scheme based on historical findings. Inside Kirche Mölkau, a remarkable artifact awaits. A tombstone rests in the altar area, bearing the image of Alexander Alesius, a Scottish scholar. Alesius, a professor of theology in Leipzig, found refuge in the city after fleeing his homeland due to religious persecution. His granddaughter later married into the Scipio family, connecting him to the founders of Kirche Mölkau. The church’s rich musical heritage also deserves mention. In 1824, the renowned organ builder Friedrich Ladegast replaced the old organ with a masterpiece of his own. This organ, a treasure in its own right, underwent comprehensive restoration in 1999, ensuring that its melodies continue to inspire. Kirche Mölkau’s story is a tapestry woven from threads of faith, resilience, and artistic expression. It stands not just as a building, but as a living chronicle of a community’s enduring spirit.
