Sixty-one years. Sixty-one years the Erløserkirche community in Leipzig existed without a church building. Can you imagine? Right here before you stands their dream realized.
The Erløserkirche in Leipzig’s Reudnitz-Thonberg district is a testament to unwavering faith. Its predecessor a church built in 1869 was destroyed in 1945 during the bombing of Leipzig. The old church’s spire was even demolished in June 1945. The congregation was left without a church for over six decades.
They persevered. They held onto their hope. They saved money. This new building is a direct result of their dedication. The congregation’s persistent fundraising efforts are the main reason why this marvelous building stands today.
Construction began in 2004 and concluded in 2006. The cornerstone was laid on May 12 2005. The official consecration was held on Pentecost Sunday June 4 2006. The design is a testament to modern architecture. A two-story central structure with a freestanding bell tower is the main feature. Large glass panels allow for plenty of natural light.
The bells themselves though hold a unique story. They hail from the former church in Kleinliebenau near Leipzig. Their dedication was on April 24 2006.
The Erløserkirche’s design allows for flexibility. Folding glass walls and large doors connect the sanctuary with group rooms and a foyer. This allows for expansion during larger gatherings. Even with its flexibility the sanctuary maintains a distinct identity. The height the white walls and the colorful light filtering through the stained glass roof all contribute to its character. The building cost 930 000 Euros. Much of this was from donations. This included the legacy of a wealthy pastor. He specifically requested that his money be used solely for the construction of a new church.
