Gazing upon this unassuming stone, could you imagine the clash of thousands of soldiers right here? This, my friends, is Apelstein 14. Apelstein 14 stands as a silent sentinel. It whispers tales of a battle that shook the foundations of Europe. It is a monument to the Battle of Leipzig, also known as the Battle of Nations.

Apelstein 14 marks the position of Lieutenant General Saint Priest’s Russian corps during the Battle of Möckern on October 16, 1813. The inscription on the Apelstein tells us that St. Priest commanded 12,000 Russian troops. This battle was a crucial prelude to the larger Battle of Leipzig. Theodor Apel, a Leipzig citizen, commissioned these stones. He wanted to commemorate the pivotal moments of the battle. There are 50 Apelsteine scattered across the landscape, each marking a specific troop position.

The Apelstein 14 stands in Lindenthal. It silently observes the passage of time, a testament to the sacrifices made during the battle. Originally, the Apelsteine were simple sandstone pillars. However, the fragility of the sandstone meant many were replaced with more durable copies. Sometimes they were moved slightly from their original locations. Apelstein 14, like many others, faced the ravages of time. It might not be in its exact original spot. Yet, it still serves its purpose. It reminds us of the tumultuous events of 1813. The Battle of Möckern, where St. Priest’s troops held their ground, raged just beyond where we stand now.

Apelstein 14 offers us a glimpse into the past. It allows us to connect with the soldiers who fought here. It gives form to the historical narrative. Imagine the roar of cannons, the clash of steel, the cries of men. This unassuming stone monument acts as a touchstone to a pivotal moment in European history. The Battle of Leipzig changed the political landscape of Europe. It’s impact resonated through time, all the way to where we stand today, by Apelstein 14.
