Beneath our feet lies a silent witness to a monumental clash. The Apelstein 1 Obelisk stands as a solemn reminder of the Battle of Leipzig. It is one of 50 such memorials. These stones mark the positions of armies during that epic conflict.

Guido Theodor Apel designed these memorials. He lived from 1811 to 1867. Apel personally funded the creation of 44 of these markers between 1861 and 1864. Others were erected later by private individuals, Apel’s foundation, and various associations.

Look closely at the Apelstein 1 Obelisk. Notice the inscriptions. They tell a story of armies and commanders. The inscriptions reveal troop numbers and battle dates. This one commemorates Victor Herz. He commanded Beluno’s II Corps. His corps consisted of 20,000 men.

The inscription notes the Schlacht bei Wachau. That is the Battle of Wachau. It took place on October 16, 1813. This battle was a key part of the larger Battle of Leipzig.

The Battle of Leipzig was also known as the Battle of the Nations. It raged from October 16 to 19 in 1813. Napoleon Bonaparte’s French army faced a coalition. The coalition included forces from Russia, Prussia, Austria, and Sweden. Polish, Italian, and German troops fought alongside the French. The coalition achieved a decisive victory.

Nearly 600,000 soldiers participated. This made it the largest European battle before World War I. It was the bloodiest battle of the Napoleonic Wars. The French suffered 45,000 killed or wounded. 36,000 soldiers were captured, including 15,000 wounded. The coalition mourned 54,000 killed or wounded.

Imagine the aftermath of such carnage. So many dead and wounded overwhelmed the ability to care for them. Typhus and cholera erupted in and around Leipzig. These diseases rapidly spread across Germany. Eventually, they reached throughout Europe.

The Apelstein 1 Obelisk is more than just a stone. It represents the human cost of war. It symbolizes the clash of empires. This memorial connects us to a pivotal moment in European history. Let us remember the sacrifices made here. Let us strive for a future where such battles are relegated to the history books.
