Lake Constance is a large lake at the southern end of Germany. The Rhine River flows through it. The lake touches Germany, Switzerland, and Austria. All three countries have lighthouses. These lighthouses guide ships and boats.
Lindau Lighthouse is the southernmost lighthouse in Germany. It sits on Lake Constance. It was built from 1853 to 1856. The light first shone on October 4, 1856. It replaced an older light in the Mangturm tower.
In its early days, the light came from an open oil fire. The keeper had to keep the fire burning. They also operated a bell and foghorn. Later, they switched to kerosene and then gas. Since 1936, it has been electric. It became automated in the early 1990s. Ships can turn on the light with radio signals. The light flashes once every three seconds. Two rotating reflectors create this flash.
The Bavarian Railway Company built Lindau Lighthouse and the port. Later, Deutsche Bahn’s shipping department ran it. In 2002, the city works of Constance bought the port. In 2010, the town of Lindau took over the port and lighthouse. Visitors can learn about local plants and animals. They can also learn about shipping on Lake Constance. The lighthouse is a popular photo spot.
