Ever wonder why a city on the German-Swiss border became a pivotal point in religious history? Here at the Auferstehungskirche in Konstanz, we are standing at a place deeply connected to the Reformation.

Konstanz found itself at the center of the world stage from 1414 to 1418. The Council of Constance convened here. It aimed to resolve the Western Schism. Three rival popes were deposed. A new pope was elected.

But the council also condemned Jan Hus. He was a Bohemian reformer. Despite promises of safe passage, Hus was burned at the stake in 1415. His death resonated. Martin Luther later saw Hus as a hero. He became a role model in the fight for Church renewal.

Konstanz embraced the Reformation in the 1520s. This prompted the Bishop to relocate to Meersburg. In 1530, local reformers presented the Tetrapolitan Confession. This was their unique take on Protestant beliefs.

The Blarer siblings played a key role. Ambrosius, Margarethe, and Thomas, along with their cousin Johannes Zwick, shaped the Reformation in Konstanz. They sought a middle ground. It was between the Wittenberg and Swiss Reformations. Their hymns were published in the Constance Song Book in 1534. Some still appear in German Protestant hymnals today.

Margarethe Blarer established a system. This system cared for the poor and sick. But the city’s Protestant path wasn’t without obstacles.

Emperor Karl V imposed the Augsburg Interim in 1548. Konstanz refused to comply. The Emperor imposed an Imperial Ban. The city lost its free imperial status. Konstanz was forced to surrender. It came under Hapsburg Austria. The city was re-Catholicized.

It wasn’t until the 19th century. Konstanz became part of the Grand Duchy of Baden. A Protestant community could re-establish itself. In 1865, the foundation stone for a Lutheran church was laid. This commemorated the 450th anniversary of Jan Hus’s execution.

The Auferstehungskirche stands as a testament. It marks the resilience of the Protestant community in Konstanz. It reminds us of the city’s complex religious past. The city’s journey through reformation and conflict shaped its identity. This unique history remains palpable even today.
